Eureka!

I think I have figured it out. If you're trying to convey an opinion about a game that you believe is getting unjustly criticized then you are whining. If said game is one that has a popular opinion of being bad then you are an idiot with bad taste in games. But, if you are trying to convince someone that game X is better or what game Y was suppose to be, well then you are a fanboi. Also it seems that opinions are not to be respected if they are blatantly wrong, and believing that game Y is not bad means your opinion is wrong.

To misquote Futurama, "your opinion is bad and you should feel bad!"

That does seem to encapsulate the mindset of many online commentators. It never seems to occur to anyone that other people could have different tastes, and thus genuinely enjoy something that said commentator does not.

The rhetorical hoop jumps I have seen folks go through on message boards to try and "prove" that folks that like a game they dislike are somehow inferior judges of what sucks or not...honestly makes me a little ashamed to be human.

If you had tried to explain to me when I was 6 that there were such irredeemable asshats among our kind, I would not have believed you.
